Zoning
See also: Land Use Code
What Is It?
Our Zoning Code determines how land is used and developed in Seattle. Zoning districts are adopted by ordinance and specify the types of uses allowed in each district. The zoning districts (such as neighborhood residential, commercial, industrial, and downtown zoning) are shown geographically on the City's official land use map. The City’s Comprehensive Plan and associated growth strategy are implemented in part through the use and development standards across zoning districts.
Recent updates to zoning districts and standards aim to:
- Help make Seattle more affordable to more households
- Create economically inclusive neighborhoods
- Reduce market pressures that are forcing many to leave the city
- Help address one of the root causes of homelessness
- Reduce regional sprawl and greenhouse gas emissions
- Support economic opportunity and mobility
- Help businesses attract and retain employees
