- Speed cushions
- On-street parking removal and changes
- Vegetation clearing and trimming to improve sidewalk acces

Parking changes
To make room for the new shared-use path and bike lane, we’re removing on-street parking on the north side of NE 54th St between the softball field and 22nd Ave NE. Much of this parking was not legal because it was too close to crosswalks and intersections, so removing it helps us follow state law.
We’re also changing back-in parking to parallel parking on the west side of 22nd Ave NE between NE 54th St and NE 45th St. See the two maps for the locations of these parking changes.
What to expect during construction
We expect to build this project in 2026. During construction, you can expect:
- Crews working from 7 AM to 5 PM, usually on weekdays but sometimes on weekends
- Noise, vibration, dust, and debris
- “No Parking” signs at least 72 hours before construction starts
- Construction materials and parking impacts near the work sites
- Crosswalk and sidewalk closures, and detours for people walking and biking
- Temporary traffic lane changes
- Changes in construction schedules due to weather or the availability of work crews and/or materials
Funding
This work is funded by the 2024 voter-approved Seattle Transportation Levy and directly supports our Vision Zero goal to end traffic deaths and serious injuries on city streets by 2030.
Frequently Asked Questions
We're making changes to parking to create room for a new shared-use path and protected bike lane, improve visibility at intersections and driveways, and make it easier to access the sidewalk on 22nd Ave NE. Better visibility helps reduce crashes and makes it safer for everyone, whether you're walking, biking, or driving.
Most of the parking being removed on NE 54th St wasn’t legal because it was too close to intersections and crosswalks. Removing it helps us comply with state law.
No. 22nd Ave NE south of NE 50th St is part of Restricted Parking Zone (RPZ) 6 today. RPZ restrictions, and RPZ areas, will not change as part of this project. For information on RPZs, see https://www.seattle.gov/transportation/permits-and-services/permits/parking-permits/rpz-permits
Street space is limited, and adding a protected bike lane in both directions would require removing significantly more parking. To minimize parking impacts, we are adding shared lane markings (sharrows) in the northbound direction. Because northbound travel is downhill, people biking can ride more comfortably in the travel lane than in the uphill direction.
We’re trimming trees and removing a small number of shrubs to improve sidewalk access and increase visibility at intersections and driveways. We’ll only remove vegetation that affects access and sightlines.
We expect construction to begin in 2026. We’ll share more details when we know more.
